Recovery technology of fiber reinforced composite materials

At present, there are three main recycling methods for carbon fiber composite waste: physical recovery (mechanical method: degraded utilization, pulverized utilization), chemical treatment (subcritical fluid, supercritical fluid, directed degradation, common solvent, etc.) and pyrolysis treatment (anaerobic pyrolysis, microwave pyrolysis, molten salt pyrolysis, etc.).

01 Physical Reclamation

The process is simple, does not produce pollutants, can recover short fiber composite particles of different lengths, but also limited to short fiber, because the fiber in the recovery process is greatly damaged, unable to get long fiber.

02 Chemical Treatment

Subsupercritical fluid: This method has the advantages of cheap raw materials, environmental protection recovery process, clean surface of recycled fiber and excellent performance. However, the reaction equipment of this method is expensive, the requirement is high, the reaction condition is harsh, and the safety factor is low. At present, the method is still in the laboratory stage, and has not been scaled up in industrialization. Solvent dissociation method: simple operation, low equipment requirements, but the reaction time is generally long, and the solvent usually causes certain damage to the fiber or the environment, the waste liquid after treatment exists secondary pollution, currently limited to laboratory research.

03 Pyrolysis treatment

Pyrolysis is a method to decompose the composite resin matrix in an inert gas or anaerobic environment at 300 ~ 800℃ (the specific operating temperature depends on the pyrolysis temperature of the resin), so as to realize the recovery of carbon fiber and other materials. The low molecular weight organic compounds produced by pyrolysis can be used as chemical raw materials or fuels. The quality of carbon fiber obtained by pyrolysis is relatively stable, and the method is suitable for the contaminated carbon fiber composite wastes.

By comparison, it can be seen that pyrolysis treatment is the most promising recycling technology at present. It can not only realize the utilization of high-value materials, but also greatly reduce energy consumption and environmental pollution through the recycling and reuse of fiber composite components. It plays a very important role in the development of composite materials industry, and is the only recycling technology of carbon fiber composite materials that can realize industrial production.
